DESIGN STAR (12-16+)
Let’s get you on track to becoming a design star! The fashion industry is all about finding inspiration. Some designers rework styles from past decades. Take, for example, platform shoes, 80s revival, and Mad Men fever. Others look to iconic designers of the past to inspire their current collections. In this week-long course, you will learn how to sew while looking to different decades and different designers for ideas. You’ll design a dress that incorporates a style and a fashion designer’s look from the past. And you’ll work with both new fabrics and existing pieces to put together something unique. At the end of the course, you’ll present your garment to the rest of the class, giving everyone insight into the decade and designer who inspired your garment the most. As a final project, we’ll show you how to copy a garment straight from an international runway show.

CAMP BREAKDOWN

Monday

Introduction: Design Star
Learn sewing basics
Make a simple, fashion-forward handbag
Fashion industry guest speaker: Learn about fashion trends of the past and iconic fashion designers
Homework: Collect tear sheets (or print images) of decade and designer inspirations, and bring a garment from home that you’ll incorporate into your new piece.

Tuesday

Learn fashion illustration techniques
Sketch your design
Learn tricks and techniques for reworking an existing garment
Choose the fabrics that you’ll incorporate into your piece

Wednesday

Begin creating your unique dress, incorporating the inspirations you’ve chosen

Thursday

Continue working on your garment until it’s complete

Friday

Copy a garment seen on an international runway
Present your original garment to the other students and educate everyone on the decade and designer that inspired you.
